Morning Alchemy Instant Coffee (Medium Roast)
Most mushroom coffee will not tell you how much mushroom is in it. This one is 70% coffee, 15% lion's mane, 15% chaga.
That is printed on the label. Go and check the brand you currently buy. Nine times out of ten you will find a proprietary blend and no percentages, which is how a product with a pinch of mushroom gets sold as mushroom coffee.
The coffee half matters too
Most functional coffee treats the coffee as a delivery vehicle and uses whatever is cheapest. This is single-origin Papua New Guinea arabica, typica and bourbon varietals, rounded out with Brazilian and Mexican beans.
Freeze-dried rather than spray-dried. Spray-drying is cheaper and it cooks off the aromatics, which is why most instant coffee tastes like a memory of coffee.
Chocolate notes, a little earthiness from the chaga, full-bodied. It tastes like coffee, not like a supplement.
What the mushrooms are doing
Lion's Mane, the mushroom most associated with cognitive support. Chaga, used traditionally for immune and antioxidant support. Both organic.
At 15% each they are present at a level you can taste, which is the point of declaring the number.
Who this is for
Someone who already drinks instant, or travels, or works somewhere with no machine, and would rather the cup did something.
Who this is not for
If you grind beans every morning and care deeply about extraction, this is instant coffee and you will notice. It is a very good instant, and it is still instant.
It is caffeinated. The mushrooms do not change that.
How to make it
One teaspoon in 8 to 10oz of hot water at 160 to 175°F. Not boiling. Boiling water scorches both the coffee and the mushroom powder and makes the whole cup bitter.
Two scoops for a stronger cup, or blend with milk for something closer to a latte.
Questions people actually ask
Does it taste like mushrooms?
There is a mild earthiness from the chaga underneath the chocolate notes. Most people read it as depth rather than as mushroom.
How much caffeine?
It is 70% arabica, so roughly 70% of the caffeine of an equivalent scoop of straight instant coffee.
What is the difference between this and the Mushroom Coffee Blend?
This is instant, medium roast, single-origin, freeze-dried. Morning Alchemy Mushroom Coffee Blend is a dark roast ground coffee you brew normally. Same mushrooms, different format and a different cup.
Will it upset my stomach?
Mushroom coffee is usually gentler than straight coffee, and some people find the opposite. Start with one scoop.
How many cups in a tin?
54g at one teaspoon is roughly 27 cups.
How long does it keep?
Three months after opening for best quality. Keep it dry and out of sunlight.
